Issues in Everyday Life
Dimensions: Social and Personal
Your everyday life is impacted by the people in your environment and the personal issues you face.
While technical or practical challenges may be severe, most stress flows from the social dimension. It takes much effort to get to know, appreciate and handle other people who are relevant for your well-being and/or productivity.
■ This effort is reduced if the same people stay around because, over time, you find a way to get along.
i.e. where there is social stability, less attention need be given to handling others.
■ The effort is increased when people leave and new faces appear on the scene and new relationships must be managed.
i.e. where there is social change, more attention needs to be given to handling others.
Social Environment | Personal Issues | |
---|---|---|
Personal problems and issues may be straightforward or complex.
■ Where a personal issue is simple and straightforward, some form of practical adaptation can be relatively rapidly worked out, even if the issue is serious. So less attention need be given to handling mental states.
■ Where the personal issue is complicated or complex with many factors and interactions, careful thought is required before any action is taken and also while guiding the resolution. So greater attention must be given to handling your mental states.
Quadrant Differentiation
If we put these two dimensions together, a quadrant pattern reveals how methods in the various quadrants suit different conditions.
The implication here is that it is well to be aware of the way our preferred
are likely to handle the stresses of differing social situations and issues.- Explore antagonisms and affinities based on the quadrants.
