Comparing Ethical Approaches

Step 2: Plot the Approaches on the TET

Nature of quadrants in the Typology Essences Table for Ethical Choice Approaches with Y-Axis: Self-Awareness, and X-Axis: Benefit for Others.

Consider for each approach:

  • how much importance is being allocated to the output: Benefit for OthersX-axis;

&

  • how much importance is being given to the necessary means to deliver that output: Self-awarenessY-axis.

We will consider and plot approaches one by one on the blank TET with axes labelled.

Remember the Value of a TET:Closed The TET permits us to look simultaneously at all 7 approaches to ethical choice in an arrangement that reflects the basic mechanics of choice.

Start with the extremes...

We place Transcendentalist in the upper left corner of the upper left quadrant.

We place Conventionalist in the lower left corner of the lower left quadrant.

We place Communalist in the upper right corner of the upper right quadrant.

Turn to the less extreme…

We place Legitimist in the upper right part of the lower left quadrant.

We place Individualist in the lower right part of the upper left quadrant.

We place Rationalist in the lower left part of the upper right quadrant.

Then the last approach...

We show Pluralism covering a diffuse elliptical area in the lower right quadrant.

The Two THEE-Names: When making a personal ethical choice,Closed «pragmatist» is a preferred THEE-name because we generally focus on our own group. In politics, however, we are forced to deal with a variety of groups, so we will mainly use the THEE-name «pluralist».

The TET Analysis

Plotting the Pragmatist-Pluralist Approach to ethical choice on the 2x2 Typology Essences Table.

We have now completed plotting the Typology Essences Table (TET). This allows us to look simultaneously at all approaches in an arrangement that reflects the basic mechanics of committed choice.

The TET reveals additional significant features of the ethical choice approaches including:

These TET features deserve exploration to better appreciate the various approaches to ethical choice.
