Strengthen Your Position
Channels that by-pass levels can help you strengthen your position. These Channels also deal with difficulties that may emerge in particular Centres or Levels.
However, the first by-pass: CG7 - CG5, turns out to be impossible. Your selection and acceptance of incentives should not influence paying attention or joining in.
Flexibility-CG6 is part of functioning as a member of the staff community, and making the best of it. Being present, whether by paying attention or joining in, is a constant requirement aimed at your overall personal benefit. Incentives have no part to play in this. Nor does paying attention entitle, relieve or guide incentive choices directly.
The remaining bypasses should come naturally to you. They reinforce your position by enabling:
■ Greater Participation in work: CG6 ↔ CG4
■ Enhanced input to work: CG5 ↔ CG3
■ Better use of your energies at work: CG4 ↔ CG2
■ Deeper gratification from work: CG3 ↔ CG1
Greater Participation: CG6 ↔ CG4
Adjust to Developments-CG6 ↔ Track Your Position-CG4.
This is about checking your fit with the organization. It is imperative that you find out whether your way of adjusting and showing loyalty are appropriate and sufficient for management. If not, you must change or conclude that you do not fit with that organization.
Both CG6 Centres are relevant:►
Tracking your position-CG4 ensures you can check your fit. Two dimensions of that fit are evident in the two Channels. If you are effectively setting an example-CG6S, you should discover that you are viewed (like it or not) as having leadership potential, even if not of a heroic or grand nature; while if you are effectively accepting instruction-CG6O, you should check that you are indeed perceived to be a good follower.
Progress within many, probably most, large organizations requires that you be assessed as both a «good leader » and a «good follower». The reverse holds as well: both setting an example and acceptance of instructions can alter the way you track your position.
These Channels are named in accord with their function:
Leadership and Followership.
Enhanced Input: CG5 ↔ CG3
Create a Presence-CG5 ↔ Be Resourceful-CG3.
This is about making your best efforts. It is imperative that you find ways to check directly that your Involvement is in line with your Performance. That will make it evident that you are doing the best you can. There are four possible channels.
Two Channels are unwise without mediation:►
Paying attention-CG5S should not influence creative thinking-CG3S directly because raw creativity is inherently risky in an organizational context. It must be mediated by being used in special activities (CG5O) or as part of normal working (CG3O), or validated via tracking of your position (CG4B).
Joining in activities-CG5O should not directly influence the use of your abilities-CG3O because voluntary participation, whether in private mentoring or in a high-level steering group, must never interfere with doing your job. Joining in can exert an influence if it is mediated by paying attention (CG5S) or thinking creatively (CG3S), or if it flows from tracking your position (CG4B).
Two Channels are essential and also bridge the self v organization duality:►
Paying attention-CG5S directly affects the intelligent use of your abilities-CG3O. It indicates promptly and precisely when, where and even how abilities should be applied. The reverse influence holds as well: by using your abilities you know how and where to pay attention.
This Channel is named in accord with its function: Dedication.
If you join in-CG5O you will find it is natural to think creatively-CG3S. Activities extraneous to your job give you both opportunity and social permission to use your mind. You may champion a new idea, or become a stimulating member of a working group. If successful, your work experience is intensified and enhanced. Creative thinking will also allow you to see the value of activities, to suggest worthwhile activities and to influence their timing and usefulness. Others, including management, will be enriched by that.
This Channel is named in accord with its function: Enrichment.
Better Use of Energies: CG4 ↔ CG2
Track your Position-CG4B↔Influence Others-CG2B
This is about checking your status in the organization and using it accordingly. It is vital that you know how you stand in power terms relative to others.
This Channel is essential:►
A great deal of energy has to be expended on other people at work. You must therefore understand the web of power («pecking order») and your place within it. To bring pressure to bear efficiently and economically, this Channel must be active. On the one hand, tracking your position-CG4Bwill help you use the influence-CG2B you have in regard to others. On the other hand, by exerting influence with a variety of colleagues in different situations, you can discover a lot about your position. This will help you use your status sensibly.
The single Channel here is named in accord with its function: Having Status.
Deeper Gratification: CG3 ↔ CG1
Be Resourceful-CG3 ↔ See Challenges-CG1.
This is about the pleasure obtained from working creatively or in flow. Ideally, your challenges-CG1 can be delivered with the aid of others. But more often than not others are busy, so you just bypass the influence others Centre.
Both Channels need activation:►
The Channel from seeing challenges-CG1B to using your abilities-CG3O is about applying yourself and working hard on your challenges. Using abilities helps you see challenges that you sense that you can meet. Seeing challenges gives life to your routine work.
This Channel is named in accord with its function: Fulfilment.

The other Channel also functions in both directions: Thinking creatively-CG3S stimulates awareness of a challenge-CG1B and seeing a challenge sparks creative thought effortlessly. Not a finger need be raised. Here is simple enjoyment.
This Channel is named in accord with its function: Enjoyment.
The Fulfilment and Enjoyment Channels naturally work best with the aid of surrounding Channels:
► Determination
► Stimulation
► Inspiration
► Performance.
