Goodness and Adversity

Progressive Handling

As explained, the Framework appears to be characterized by a focus on responsibility in the lower three Groupings and the provision of motivation in the higher three Groupings. This is integrated in building character at R"G4.

The Table reveals in more detail the way that the production of goodness is progressively handled. Read the functions through from top to bottom.

Handling Adversity

Goodness is problematic in response to stresses and adversity because egocentric fears for personal survival naturally arise. Each Grouping provides a different contribution in this regard.

  • R"G1: Ultimate Values. Human freedom permits adversity to be engaged in an enlightened way that also recognizes self-interest. These values are the means that we must generate.
  • R"G2: Strength. This is the crucial resource for preventing, circumventing and overcoming adversity without harming others. It is the worthwhile outcome we must all seek.
  • R"G3: Pain. Suffering is generated both by adversity itself and by any effective response, so the techniques of healing are needed. They are largely a matter of sheer assertion.
  • R"G4: Character. Good character ensures the best handling of adversity, while adversity in turn shapes character. This is where activity occurs.
  • R"G5: Equanimity. Through compassion, wisdom and cooperativeness, it is possible to appreciate and address effects of adversity in human terms without being knocked off balance. This is what we need and what others need from us.
  • R"G6: Vitality: Being receptive and being active form the basis for feeling good and thriving in a community even while experiencing the harshest adversity. This is a matter of belief.
  • R"G7: Great Dreams.Goodwill is the essential humane motivation in regard to handling adversity. Here is the experience that keeps us going.

Autonomy & Responsibility

The details of how our autonomy and responsibility must work together, guided by awareness has become more evident from the two great Structural Hierarchies found in the Root.

Autonomy relates to creative action. The Creativity Framework-RsH is derived from the Levels of Endeavour-RH which serve as vehicles for Freedom-Autonomy (RG1 Monads).

Responsibility relates to human goodness. This Goodness Framework-RsH" is derived from the Primal Injunctions-RH" which serve as vehicles for Values-Responsibility-Goodness (R"G1 Monads).
