Promises of Continuity: G2-Dyads

Willingness to Reassure

Offering hope-G1 when things are difficult is encouraging, but it almost immediately generates a worry as to whether this supportive interaction is just a blip. There is a desire and a need for something ongoing, for a continuity of positivity.

Willingness to provide that continuity appears to be enabled by combining adjacent levels to form 6 dyads. In any dyad, the higher level (g2) offers the quality of being unequivocal in bolstering the g1-confidence of the lower level. Unequivocal means unambiguous, unconditional and without inner doubts or qualifications.

Communicating reassurance calls for a promise of continuity and this can be generated in 6 ways:

  • Perseverance (G21)
  • Realization (G22)
  • Engagement (G23)
  • Commitment (G24)
  • Development (G25)
  • Cultivation (G26)

The dyads reveal 3 different foci for reassurance:

  • In the lower 2 dyads, the focus is personal:
Perseverance is volitional, while Realization is cognitive

  • In the middle 2 dyads, the focus is inter-personal:
Engagement is relational, while Commitment is social

  • In the upper 2 dyads, the focus is intra-personal:
Development is maturational, while Cultivation is transcendental

The function of the dyads is proposed as: to establish for oneself and others that involvement will be sustained despite setbacks.

Given that unequivocal is the qualifier, dysfunction shows up through equivocating or operating in a perfunctory way.

Destructiveness presents here as betrayal due to the experience of being let down or even abandoned.

Properties: All the promises involve binding yourself despite not knowing the consequences. As a result, they all call for courage and determination, patience, self-discipline and tolerance of discomfort.

Promises of Continuity

Persevere-G21

Function in communicating reassurance: To provide continuing effort—despite difficulties and setbacks.

Persevering is based in confidently trying-g1 with unequivocal beliefs-g2 that the effort is worthwhile and usually specific beliefs relating to the issue or its context.

Support comes from confidently trying. If there is a failure, then trying may occur with a different approach. However, if the task proves too hard or becomes impossible, confidence goes and perseverance stops.

Drive comes from application of relevant unshakeable beliefs, including the ability to complete the task.

Focus of BindingA task that achieves a goal.

Inner Requirement: Mobilization of energies.

What is at Stake:  Tangible resources that are consumed and potentially wasted if perseverance is fruitless.

Dysfunction:  Irrational stubbornness in the face of changed circumstances or new information spoils perseverance. Distractions can lead to persevering intermittently or losing momentum.

Consequence of Absence: Giving up far too easily and unnecessarily in relatively simply challenges, while complex challenges are unlikely to be commenced.

Realize-G22

Function in communicating reassurance: To become aware of a crucial aspect of a situation—despite the possibility of being wrong.

Realizing is based in confidently believing-g1 and unequivocally facing-g2the situation.

Support comes from confidence in beliefs that are directly relevant or related to the context.

Drive comes from a resolute determination to cut through superficial appearances or face unpleasant aspects so as to know what is going on.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding: A truth that cannot be gainsayed.

Inner Requirement: Penetrating perceptionthat is unsatisfied with first impressions or easily obtained data but gets to the heart of the mater.

What is at Stake:  Knowing what everyone knows and seeing what everyone sees is conformity. The more difficult it is to penetrate to the underlying reality, the greater the risk to personal credibility. Getting it wrong can be even more damaging to credibility.

Dysfunction:  A preference for comforting illusions will prevent or weaken penetration to a disturbing reality. Biases may intrude and lead to distorted views.

Consequence of Absence: A person becomes blind or complacently accepts delusional views. Conventional wisdom may be expediently adopted rather than allowing awareness to develop.

Engage-G23

Function in communicating reassurance: To become an intrinsic part of a social situation—despite possible uncongenial or detrimental events in the future.

Engaging is based in confidently facing-g1 the reality and unequivocally participating-g2 with one or more others.

Support comes from confidence in knowledge about the other party and the relationship.

Drive comes from an irrevocable participation in accord with social conventions and situational requirements.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding:  A presence that will be socially recognized.

Inner Requirement: Some affinitybased in a mutuality in feelings. shared understanding, and similar tastes. This enables sympathy, favour, support and loyalty for the other party.

What is at Stake:  If the sympathy and affinity are not genuine and persisting, the engagement quickly weakens and a person' s authenticity is questioned.

Dysfunction:  If the necessary boundaries and distance are not maintained, there is a one-sided infatuation, over-involvement or enmeshment.

Consequence of Absence: A person becomes disconnected or detached from others.

Commit-G23

Function in communicating reassurance: To bind oneself to a path into the future—despite uncertainty about the process or outcome.

Committing is based in confidently participating-g1 and unequivocally risking-g2.

Support comes from confidently belonging to a group or social situation which is affected by the promise and anchors your identity.

Drive comes from unequivocally wanting the benefit that is expected by being bound in the face of known dangers.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding: A destiny because your personal identity gets irreversibly shaped by each and every commitment.

Inner Requirement: Because the commitment is identity-defining, you must take ownership of it wherever it may lead and whatever the ultimate outcome.

What is at Stake:  With a commitment, there is maximum concern that you follow through on what you promise and accept the risks. So your integrity is at stake.

Dysfunction:  Over-confidence can lead to over-commitment which results in great difficulty delivering in many cases. Reckless commitment can generate unnecessary dangers and likely harm.

Consequence of Absence: A refusal to commit leads to social isolation and personal emptiness.

Develop-G25

Function in communicating reassurance: To enable new possibilities to emerge—despite likely costs, errors and failures in the process.

Developing is based in confidently risking-g1 and unequivocally learning-g2.

Support comes from a confidence to put energy and resources into risky experiments and to learn from experiences.

Drive comes from an unstoppable need to fill gaps in ability by continually learning in different ways throughout life.

ClosedMore

Focus of BindingA potential that lies within you and that will not be realized unless it is deliberately developed.

Inner Requirement: Development depends on the activation of aspirations and relevant ideals to shape and power the learning effort.

What is at Stake:  Development is the foundation for personal and professional growth. The continual flow of technological innovations generates demands for mastery so the future can be embraced.

Dysfunction: Growth goes wrong if development is not taken seriously enough and a person falls behind peers. Sometimes development is weak because of poor teaching or because of superficial engagement with learning. A different sort of dysfunction results from adopting over-ambitious and therefore unrealistic development goals.

Consequence of Absence: Development is a life-long requirement. Avoiding or refusing to develop leads to personal stagnation. Without development, an available evolutionary trajectory will be missed.

Cultivate-G26

Function in communicating reassurance: To nurture a relationship or ability—despite temptations to abandon the quest.

Cultivating is based in confidently learning-g1 and unequivocally trusting-g2.

Support comes from confidently absorbing knowledge and deepening understanding.

Drive comes from unequivocally trusting to the point of self-sacrifice.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding: The betterment of a person's character or soul.

Inner Requirement: Dedication to the entity or capacity being cultivated.

What is at Stake:  Cultivation aims at an inner refinement and sometimes enlightenment. The end result should be inner nobility within the character.

Dysfunction:  Pursuit of cultivation may become a form of indulgence and provide an escape from the rigours of everyday life.

Consequence of Absence: Without appropriate cultivation, a person will remain uncultured, unrefined and unenlightened.

Review

The G1-vehicles of faith appear to be a matter personal assertion directed outwards to others who it is assumed will respond by sharing that faith and hoping.

By contrast, the G2-promises of continuity are choices directed inwards to oneself but dependent on social approval —or at least confirmation from others that they are feeling reasssured as intended.

Transition

Continuity has been promised—but often, especially in difficult situations, it is easy to lose focus, direction and momentum.

The possibility of going astray is your responsibility and not so much the concern of recipients.

A way to proceed must be found to deal with diverse emerging difficulties, uncertainties, blocks and distracting diversions.

It turns out that it is possible to maintain intentions by adding an additional adjacent level to form triads that reveal powerful means of proceeding—if the willingness is there.
