Promises of Continuity: G2-Dyads

"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same."

"If", Rudyard Kipling

Applying Determination

Generating hope-G1 when things are difficult is encouraging, but it almost immediately leads to a concern that these efforts are just a blip. Everyone experiences a need for ongoing active positivity. They seek reassurance from pledges to persist through to ultimate success no matter how difficult the course.

That can be handled through expressing a determination to proceed and optimistically promising that there will be continuity—even though it is impossible to guarantee the future.

This function appears to be enabled by combining adjacent levels to form 6 dyads.

Dyads require a qualifier which should fit with believing-L2, and this is provisionally proposed as «unequivocal». Unequivocal means being unambiguous, unconditional and without displaying inner doubts or qualifications. In any dyad, the higher level (g2) offers an unequivocal quality to bolster the g1-confidence of the lower level.

Applying determination communicates a promise of continuity and that can be generated in 6 ways:

  • Persevering (G21)
  • Realizing (G22)
  • Engaging (G23)
  • Committing (G24)
  • Developing (G25)
  • Cultivating (G26)

The function of applying determination is proposed as: to establish for oneself and others that efforts will be sustained despite setbacks.

These 6 dyads reveal 3 different foci for determination:

  • In the lower 2 dyads, the focus is personal
    i.e. based only on a person's strength—or weakness:
Perseverance is volitional, while Realization is cognitive.

  • In the middle 2 dyads, the focus is inter-personal
i.e. involving others directly or indirectly—or withdrawing:
Engagement is relational, while Commitment is social.

  • In the upper 2 dyads, the focus is intra-personal:
i.e. fostering growth—or rejecting inner evolution
Development is maturational, while Cultivation is transcendental.

Requirements: All the promises involve binding yourself despite not knowing the consequences. As a result, they all call for courage and resolve.

Dysfunction shows up through equivocating or operating in a perfunctory way, which may appear as hesitation, vacillation, or dithering.

Destructiveness presents here as a betrayal that breaks faith and dashes the previously raised hopes.

Promises of Continuity

Persevere-G21

Function in applying determination: To provide continuing effort—despite difficulties and setbacks.

Persevering is constituted by confidently trying-g1 with unequivocal beliefs-g2 related to the effort.

Base is found in confidently trying. If there is a failure, then trying must occur with a different approach. There is no limit to the different tacks that may be taken because once a limit is hit, confidence goes and perseverance stops.

Force comes from application of relevant unshakeable beliefs, including that the effort is worthwhile and that a suitable path forward can be found one way or another. There are also likely to be specific beliefs relating to the issue and its context.

ClosedMore

Focus of BindingA task that achieves a goal.

Inner Requirement: Stamina and resilience.

What is at Stake:  Tangible resources that are consumed and potentially wasted if perseverance is fruitless.

Dysfunction:  Irrational stubbornness in the face of changed circumstances or new information spoils perseverance. Distractions can lead to persevering becoming intermittent with loss of momentum.

Consequence of Absence: A person gives up far too easily and unnecessarily on relatively simple challenges; while complex or seemingly impossible challenges are unlikely to be commenced.

Realize-G22

Function in applying determination: To become aware of a crucial aspect of a situation—despite the possibility of being wrong.

Realizing is constituted by confidently believing-g1 and unequivocally facing-g2 the situation.

Base is provided by confidence in beliefs that are directly relevant to the situation or related to the context or oneself.

Force comes from being resolute in cutting through superficial appearances, so as to know what is really going on. Becoming aware of all relevant aspects requires personal views and feelings like pain or embarrassment to be put to one side.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding: A truth that cannot be gainsayed.

Inner Requirement: Penetrating perception that is unsatisfied with first impressions or superficial data but gets to the heart of the matter.

What is at Stake:  Conforming to what everyone knows and seeing what everyone sees offers safety. Being aware outside this boundary is dangerous and risks credibility. The more difficult it is to penetrate to the underlying reality, the greater the risk to personal credibility. Getting it wrong can be even more damaging to credibility.

Dysfunction:  A preference for comforting illusions will prevent or weaken penetration to a disturbing reality. Biases may intrude and lead to distorted views.

Consequence of Absence: A person becomes blind or complacently develops or accepts delusional views. Conventional wisdom may be expediently adopted rather than allowing awareness to develop. Attempting the impossible will have no chance of success if the evolving realities are not grasped.

Engage-G23

Function in applying determination: To become an intrinsic part of a social situation—despite possible uncongenial or detrimental events in the future.

Engaging is constituted by confidently facing-g1 the relevant reality and unequivocally participating-g2 in the situation.

Base is provided by confidence in awareness of whatever is relevant in the situation, often a person or group but it could be an event or project.

Force comes from an irrevocable participation and social bonding in accord with conventions and situational requirements.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding:  A presence that will be socially recognized.

Inner Requirement: Some affinity flowing from a mutuality in feelings, shared understanding, and similar tastes. This fosters sympathy, favour, support and loyalty for the other party.

What is at Stake:  If the sympathy and affinity are not genuine and persisting, the engagement quickly weakens and a person's sincerity is then questioned.

Dysfunction:  If the necessary boundaries and distance are not maintained, there is a one-sided infatuation, over-involvement or enmeshment.

Consequence of Absence: A person becomes disconnected and stays detached from others. This interferes with personal growth generally and impedes the cooperation commonly required when attempting the impossible.

Commit-G24

Function in applying determination: To bind oneself to a path into the future—despite uncertainty about the process or outcome.

Committing is constituted by confidently participating-g1 and unequivocally risking-g2.

Base is found in confidently belonging to a group or social situation which anchors your identity and is affected by the promise.

Force comes from unequivocally wanting the benefit that is expected by becoming bound to a course in the face of known and unknown potential dangers.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding: A destiny because personal identity gets irreversibly shaped by each and every commitment.

Inner Requirement: Because a commitment is identity-defining, you must take ownership of it wherever it may lead and whatever the ultimate outcome.

What is at Stake:  With a commitment, there is maximum concern that you follow through on what you promise and accept the risks. So your integrity is at stake.

Dysfunction:  Over-confidence can lead to over-commitment causing great difficulty in functioning as expected on multiple occasions. Reckless commitment can generate unnecessary dangers and is likely to lead to harm.

Consequence of Absence: A refusal to commit leads to social isolation and personal emptiness. No difficult challenge will be undertaken.

Develop-G25

Function in applying determination: To enable new possibilities to emerge—despite likely costs, missteps and failures in the process.

Developing is constituted by confidently risking-g1 and unequivocally learning-g2.

Base is provided by confidently putting energy and resources into experiments, new personal experiences and learning events with no certainty of benefits.

Force comes from an unstoppable drive to fill gaps in abilities by continually learning in different ways and reflecting constructively on whatever eventuates.

ClosedMore

Focus of BindingA potential that lies within you and that will not be realized unless it is deliberately worked on.

Inner Requirement: Development depends on the activation of aspirations and relevant ideals to shape and power the learning effort.

What is at Stake:  Development is the foundation for personal and professional growth. Continual social changes and technological innovations call for mastery so the future can be embraced.

Dysfunction: Growth goes wrong if development is not taken seriously enough and a person falls behind peers. Sometimes development is weak because of poor teaching or because of superficial engagement with learning. A different sort of dysfunction results from adopting grandiose or over-ambitious development goals which are unachievable.

Consequence of Absence: Development is a life-long requirement and likely to be relevant when attempting the impossible. Avoiding or refusing to develop will interfere with opportunities and block take-up of innovations, ultimately leading to personal stagnation.

Cultivate-G26

Function in applying determination: To nurture a relationship or capacity—despite temptations to abandon the quest.

Cultivating is constituted by confidently learning-g1 and unequivocally trusting-g2.

Base is provided by confidently absorbing knowledge and deepening understanding, usually under the tutelage of a master.

Force comes from a devoted dedication based on unequivocally trusting the other or a school and also the process.

ClosedMore

Focus of Binding: The betterment of a person's character or soul.

Inner Requirement: Self-sacrifice for the entity or capacity being cultivated.

What is at Stake:  Cultivation aims at an inner refinement and sometimes enlightenment of the higher self (PsH4G35). The result is a spiritual purification and an inner nobility.

Dysfunction:  Pursuit of cultivation may become a form of indulgence and provide an escape from the rigours of everyday life.

Consequence of Absence: Without appropriate cultivation, a person will remain uncultured, unrefined and unenlightened. This leads to a lack of subtlety and a failure to capture nuances.

Contrasts

Monads and Dyads

G1-hoping appears to involve assertion independently directed outwards to others who, it is assumed, will respond to the intrinsic positivity.

By contrast, the G2-determination involves assertion directed inwards to oneself but dependent on confirmation from others that they respect the promise and are reassured.

Upper Three vs Lower Three

The binding requirement in the lower three is external/tangible
i.e. G21-Task/Resources, G22-Truth/Credibility, G23-Presence/Sincerity.

The binding requirement in the upper three is internal/transformative
i.e. G24-Destiny/Integrity, G25-Potential/Growth, G26-Betterment/Purity.

Transition

Continuity has been promised—but often, especially in difficult situations and even given intense determination, it is easy to lose focus.

The possibility of going astray is ever-present. Determination does not protect you from emerging difficulties, delays, uncertainties, setbacks, blocks and distracting diversions. Quite the contrary: you are forced to address these.

You are attempting the impossible after all, and (like Rome) it won't get done in a day. So, whatever happens, you must seek to prevail and, whether or not you succeed, you must endure. You may not progress as you desire, but you must hold out and manage even in the most difficult circumstances.

Developing endurance is possible by adding an additional adjacent level to form triads which reveal 5 essential means of prevailing.
